Well, but I am still in troubles with this machine.
After "emerge-webrsync" 
my 2005.0 profile is gone,
so I can not go back to it
and update portage.
With all profiles I have
I am getting:

e64 etc # emerge -av portage

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies \!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to an ebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/libiconv-0)

I restored 2005.0 profile 
from an old installation CD.
I can go on.
