is alacarte-0.10.2 really necessary? I think not every gnome dependency but this one can be met and it doesn't have a equiry d dependency
that packages requires python-2.8
Steps to Reproduce:
2.eventually spawns emerge for alacarte-0.10.2 which cannot be satisfied because python-2.8 isn't available
emerge of alacarte disrupting emerge -Duv world
if required alacarte should emerge
I don't think alacarte is viable application in it's present form, what does it do, has anybody run it?
Post some errors, emerge output or whatever; there's no python-2.8 dependency anywhere.
$ emerge -pv =alacarte-0.10.2
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] x11-misc/alacarte-0.10.2 USE="-debug" 197 kB
emerge alacarte and you will see it when the build dies
Well, as said above, post the error, emerge --info and reopen then. We are more than busy enough for such riddles.

I would question if this emerge had ever been tested. I think this is the product of shoddy workmanship.

1/ pygtk != python
checking for pygtk 2.8.0 installed for python 2.4... not found
configure: error: required pygtk version not found
2/ The ebuild already depends on >=dev-python/pygtk-2.8; re-emerge it and try again...
3/ If it still doesn't compile then, you'll have to attach the config.log as well, as told by the error message.
