Description Claudio S 2007-05-27 12:28:16 UTC
While i try to emerge vmware-modules, I always get this message:

Makefile:127: *** Inappropriate build environment: you wanted to use gcc version while kernel attempts to use gcc version 4.1.2.
Makefile:129: *** For proper build you'll have to replace i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc with symbolic link to . Stop.

The lines causing the message, in the Makefile, are:
   126	ifneq ($(VM_CCVER), $(VMCCVER))
127	$(warning *** Inappropriate build environment: you wanted to use gcc \
128 version $(VM_CCVER) while kernel attempts to use gcc version $(VMCCVER).)
129	$(error For proper build you'll have to replace $(CC) with symbolic \
   130 link to $(VM_CC))

So, the Makefile could not determine which version of gcc to use. It set the VMCCVER variable, but it cannot set the VM_CCVER variabile (it is void, as you can see). Then, it set the VM_CC variabile, while it cannot set the CC variable, which is a little strange.

Bypassing this error by commenting lines 126-130, as suggested in the link i posted in the URL section, result in this error:

make: *** No rule to make target `auto-build'. Stop.

I don't know if this is related to the use of a patched kernel, however I can't find any working workaround.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge vmware-modules
2.
3.

Actual Results:
The message posted above

Expected Results:
The correct build of the package

emerge --info -v

The same problem happens when I try to install vmware after downloading from their site. I did not understand if it is a problem related to their perl installation script or to some misconfiguration in my computer.

VERSION="Sun JDK 1.5.0.06" <-- this has nothing to do in your environment.
