and because I was reading over the other bugs and this might be relevant:
 # equery list binutils
[ Searching for package 'binutils' in all categories among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [ -] sys-devel/binutils-2.17 (0)
[I--] [  ] sys-devel/binutils-config-1.9-r3 (0)

Lastly, the thing is trying to compile with Java 1.5 even though Java 1.4 is installed and selected as the system VM.

Reproducible: Always

Do you use some kind of strange filesystem? The build fails when portage tries to move files to their final destination.

No it doesn't (src_install != merge). Going by the log this seems to be an issue wih the documentation target in the Makefile. Dropping CC then, readd if you can point out where portage screws up.
Comment 8 Meckie 2007-04-25 20:11:43 UTC
I'm having the same issue (db & java package) on JFS filesystem. I moved the PORTAGE_TMPDIR to a nfs mount, because no other space was available, and now it works.
I think it started with the last coreutils update.

I have encountered fimiliar problem on my AMD64 system while using gcc-4.1.2 as compiler. It was solved, at least it looks like so, by switching to gcc-3.3.6 and then recompiling.
Comment 10 Fred Röhner 2007-05-04 13:10:51 UTC
same problem here while emerging update of glibc (glibc-2.5-r2)!
>> cp: preserving permissions for "/var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.5-r2/image/lib" No data available
local file system: jfs
after switching PORTAGE_TMPDIR to nfs emerge is running smoothly!
Is this a problem of jfs or of portage?
