When doing a merge Portage should check the system for the necessary disk space to both build and also install.  OpenOffice has been a particular problem in this regard.  The merge fails ungracefully with obscure errrors, often after 10's of hours of build time.  Portage can determine in advance the necessary disk space and abort the merge if it is not present in the beginning.
