Description Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2007-02-13 12:47:48 UTC
If I try to get an IP address from my starting user mode linux image via dhcpcd from my host system (use dnsmasq for DHCP service) I get the following entries in my host syslog:

Feb 13 13:40:47 n22 tun: Universal TUN/TAP device driver, 1.6
Feb 13 13:40:47 n22 tun: (C) 1999-2004 Max Krasnyansky <maxk@qualcomm.com>
Feb 13 13:40:47 n22 udevd-event[23222]: rename_netif: error changing netif name tap0 to netlink/tap0: Invalid argument
Feb 13 13:40:48 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPDISCOVER(tap0) 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9
Feb 13 13:40:48 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPOFFER(tap0) 192.168.0.50 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9
Feb 13 13:40:51 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPDISCOVER(tap0) 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9
Feb 13 13:40:51 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPOFFER(tap0) 192.168.0.50 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9
Feb 13 13:40:54 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPDISCOVER(tap0) 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9
Feb 13 13:40:54 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPOFFER(tap0) 192.168.0.50 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9
Feb 13 13:40:57 n22 dnsmasq[4897]: DHCPDISCOVER(tap0) 2a:93:e5:15:4e:b9

B/c I don't use bridging for my UML system (the parameter eth0=tuntap,,2A:93:E5:15:4E:B9,192.168.0.254 together with a valid static IP address in /etc/conf.d/net inside of the UML works fine to establish a network connection) I don't really expect to get an IP address via DHCP but the error message should go away, isn't it ?

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2007-02-13 13:49:29 UTC
It seems only that udev tries to use that rule from 50-udev.rules on the netif create event:

KERNEL=="tap*",         NAME="netlink/%k"

Perhaps we should jump over all rules from 50-udev.rules when SUBSYSTEM=="net".
As that us just an ugly msg, it will be included in next version and not immediately create a new for this bug.
Comment 2 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2007-02-17 01:39:54 UTC
Does the error disappear if you comment the rule cited in comment #1 (in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules)?
Comment 3 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2007-03-12 14:55:28 UTC
At least normal rules (from 50-udev.rules) are no longer executed for network devices with udev-106-r2.

If that does not solve your bug, please reopen it.
