Getting exacly the same error message, when ran with "emerge elfutils". ebuild /usr/portage/dev-libs/elfutils/elfutils-0.118.ebuild compile compiles without any problem. ebuild /usr/portage/dev-libs/elfutils/elfutils-0.118.ebuild install dies horribly with the problem described by original poster.
