emerge nvidia-drivers works fine. However, when reaching the end, emerge gets stuck on "updating /etc/modules.conf by hand". After a few seconds, the kernel begins swapping like mad, until the whole system becomes completely unusable. This does not happen with other packages providing external modules (fuse-2.6.1, vmware-modules- 1.0.0.15-r1). I noticed that /etc/modules.d/aliases and /etc/modules.d/nvidia defined the nvidia support' bits to different things. Suggest removing it from /etc/modules.d/aliases.
