Description Thomas Klöber 2007-01-24 12:08:59 UTC
After I upgraded from media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r4 to media-libs/mesa-6.5.2, beryl didn't display things right anymore.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r4 to media-libs/mesa-6.5.2
2. Restart X
3. Start beryl

Actual Results:
Beryl displayed black borders instead of shadows, some windows were plain white (kicker, kontact), the background wasn't drawn completely.

System Specs:
kernel 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 on an Athlon 64 3200+, running x86
Software:
x11-base/xorg-x11-7.1
x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r4
x11-base/x11-drm-20060608
x11-libs/libdrm-2.3.0
x11-wm/beryl-0.1.4

KWin displayed things right, so it's beryl-related. Re-emerging of xorg-server, x11-drm or beryl changed nothing.

Downgrade to media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r4 solved the problem.

Might actually be a problem of Mesa. For me, sci-chemistry/viewmol-2.4.1 does not view anything anymore on Radeon 9200 SE, while on VIA Unichrome it displays content shifted partially out of the window, and no recompilation of it, not even switching motif implementation between openmotif and lesstif and their recompilation, helps, and I experience various apparently random problems distributed as if randomly amongst various packages. For example gnash has stopped displaing anything too, and mplayer seems to work well with -vo gl, but not with -vo gl2; with -vo gl2 the behaviour of mplayer depends on the movie, sometimes it looks well, sometimes there are minor problems around external subtitles rendered over the image, but sometimes the whole image is scrambled completely. OpenGL screensavers display their preview out of the box in the xscreensaver configuration window on VIA Unichrome, while they seem to be OK with Radeon 9200 SE. May be there are more than one bug, but I don't know how to separate and identify them, neither even which particular upgrade brought them to my systems. Upgrading Mesa to 6.5.2-r1 did not help, so I'm going to try downgrades.

Putting >=media-libs/mesa-6.5.2 to /etc/portage/package.mask and reemerging mesa seems to have solved my problems, both with VIA Unichrome and Radeon 9200 SE videocards. Viewmol views molecules again and screensavers show their preview in the proper box of the xscreensaver configuration window.

So I guess there either is something wrong with Mesa 6.5.2, or at least Mesa 6.5.2 changed some part of its interface and multiple applications need adapting to it. Definitely it is not a problem of just beryl.

new release of upstream is coming..and beryl itself is now depreciated from upstream in favor of the joint effort.
