I have a freshly built x86 stable box. emering x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776 woks fine until it gets to "Updating /etc/modprobe.conf by hand ..." at wich point my system grinds to a halt as all available ram is used (2Gb) and the system starts swap-thrashing. Ctrl+C at this point sorts everything out, and the nvidia module works fine, however portage fails to clean itself up properly.
