there can be some problem with net-dialup/ppp-2.4.1-r11.ebuild file.I chechked ebuild and 
found this problem and also this solution 

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.


Expected Results:  
/etc/modules.d/ppp's permission cause this problem 

After installation(emerge ppp) i run  
chmod /etc/modules.d/ppp --reference=/etc/modules.d/i386  
and update-modules run without any error message
