You're trying to run the server without any arguments. Use the installed init script. "/etc/init.d/wesnothd start" should work fine.
ok thanks for the explanation. I am sorry to 'bug' you. One final question, do I need to emerge another instance of wesnoth without the server USEflag in order to play the game normally?
You only got the server because you specified the dedicated use flag. Turn that off if you want the game client installed.
