Monkey's Audio Codec is a well known lossless audio compression codecs, which file often ended with  .ape suffix. A port of it to *nix platform resides at http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac-port/ , which also provides xmms and bmp plugins. The main programme mac is essential for these plugins to handle .ape files. I wish it's legitimate to get into portage, which, together with audacious-mac plugin I'm about to summit or other plugins, will let audacious or other media player users play .ape file without difficulty.
