Installing from LiveCD 2006.1 to machine with 1GB ram, 2GB swap, the Command Line Installer dies because tmpfs (633MB) fills up.  The problem is repeatable.

You didn't specify any mountpoints. If you're using the GTK+ frontend, you ignored the nice little prompt that told you that and asked if you'd like to continue.
