Haven't tried 0.2.3, but 0.4.0.4 doesn't work here at all. Trying to read an image using it results in a black picture (which is sort of understandable as it doesn't even make the scanner head move).
Currently using the following packages (dependencies) :

Gah, sorry. The package is now "gnome-scan" and I searched for that...
gnome-scan now depends on media-libs/bebl (http://bugs.gentoo.org/183423) and media-libs/gegl (http://bugs.gentoo.org/183425)
