Description Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-29 07:08:30 UTC
This is what I get from starting X apps from a terminal... Haven't played with any of the configs.

Same here. Happens with OpenOffice and wine (and probably other apps, too). fontconfig-2.4.1.
Comment 2 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2006-10-16 15:03:25 UTC
Out of curiosity, are you both on amd64? I get these warnings too, but only in 32bit apps (as far as I've seen): openoffice-bin, wine, a static 32bit sancho.

If that is true, it looks like some emul libraries are getting outdated and need a bump ;)

My emerge info FWIW:

Yes, I am on amd64. And my freshly compiled openoffice-2.0.4 (yes, it works now under amd64, w00t!) does not print this warning, so you might be onto something...
Comment 4 UncleOwen 2006-10-16 16:48:30 UTC
Yes, that's it. I installed fontconfig in my x86-chroot and copied /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.* from the chroot to /emul/linux/x86/usr/lib. Now the warning is gone :)
Comment 5 UncleOwen 2006-10-16 16:50:25 UTC
That is /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so*, of course. And don't forget to run ldconfig :)
Comment 6 UncleOwen 2006-10-16 16:52:26 UTC
Adding amd64 to CC, as they are the ones responsible for the emul-* packages.
Comment 7 Alexander Jenisch 2006-10-25 09:31:06 UTC
i've got that too.
Comment 8 Ville Mällinen 2006-12-03 02:56:14 UTC
This is getting to be really annoying. I tried fix this using UncleOwen's advice on replies #4 and #5. It didn't help at all. Instead firefox-bin was broken. It wouldn't start at all. Eventually I was able to 'fix' the firefox by re-emerging the emul-linux-x86* packages. Just FYI if someone runs into that problem.

There's discussion about this in the forum:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-504906-highlight-fontconfig+warning+invalid+match+target.html
Is this really the root cause for wine not working properly? I've tried 10 different versions, both in stable and in testing, and none of them work OK. I get programs installed but they just wont work.
Comment 9 Ville Mällinen 2006-12-03 03:35:18 UTC
Sorry about the previous post. Downgrading to fontconfig 2.2.3 solves this for me.(In reply to comment #8)

Sorry about the ranting. Downgrading to fontconfig v.2.2.3 solved at least the fontconfig warnings.

Isn't this about having old config files in /etc/fonts that do not work properly anymore with 2.4 ? Or having 2 different fontconfig versions at the same time ?

Do the warning have any effect besides printing a message ?

More or less: current ~amd64 fontconfig is 2.4, while the emul libraries are old => loading a 32bit program uses the old libs with the new config files from fontconfig 2.4

Effects vary: some people reported mplayer-bin hogging the CPU, I did not experience that but font rendering was quite ugly in googleearth,firefox-bin, ... (I since grabbed the libs from my ~x86 chroot to fix it locally)
Comment 12 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-12-04 08:15:02 UTC
amd64 please advise on proper action ? I intend to put 2.4.x up for stabilisation soon, will that cause any serious problems for the amd64 userbase ?
Comment 13 Olivier Crete (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-12-04 09:42:00 UTC
I guess we'll have to put 2.4.x in the emul libs then.

Alright, I should have said I use amd64/~amd64 system and which version of fontconfig too. I stumbled upon this bug report while searching for info about the mysterious warnings. The fontconfig version I had used was IIRC 2.3.2-r2 version. So my posts weren't even about v.2.4, sorry.

It's difficult to guess whether there are other side effects than the warnings, but I'd say no. In my PC firefox and browsers in general can from time to time consume a lot of memory and that combined with high disk usage often leads to quite a complete lockup. But in my experience the lockups appear even after downgrading the fontconfig to the 2.2.3 version so I'd assume there's something else which is broken in my PC.
