Strigi is a daemon which uses a very fast and efficient crawler that can index data on your harddrive. It indexes within archives like zip files, and calculates a hash for each file, so it can easily detect duplicates. As Kat development seems to have stopped, and Tenor doesn't have any code in the open, it seems like Strigi is a likely candidate to provide KDE 4 with search functionality. The functionality Tenor was supposed to offer will possibly be included in Strigi. The same goes for Kat, some of its plugins are being ported by their original author to Strigi. Though there is still a lot to do, the plan is to write an API for applications to use Strigi to store and retrieve information. Kalzium might become the first user of this Strigi API, and applications like Amarok and digikam are other candidates. A simple search/control interface already exists, built with Qt4. Also a panel applet and a strigi:/ KIOslave, giving an HTML interface, have been made for KDE 3.5.x. More information about Strigi can be found on the Strigi homepage. http://strigi.sourceforge.net http://www.vandenoever.info/software/strigi/
