The previous version in portage (1.2_beta9) compiles and works fine.

I'm going to attach the complete log. Usually I also have --as-needed in LDFLAGS set, but then a different error in a different place occurs, so there seems to be an additional problem which I want to look into as soon as it does compile at all.

I fixed it in portage.
By patching Makefile.in.in but it really has to be fixed, I think, upstream using a newer gettext version.
