Well, unless there is some output that pointed to another error, it seems to be because your strip is acting weird. Usually for klibc strip is run with '--strip-all -R .comment -R .note' as arguments, and in your case it only seem to support .comment section, and not .note. Try to add a more detailed log, or maybe add V=1 to the make lines, and attach that output here.
Well, ... Cockpit error. I had a version of strip from 2005 in /usr/local/bin. (I have deleted the entire set of binutils that was lurking in /usr/local/bin.) I have marked the bug INVALID. Sorry.
