Description George Shapovalov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-03 12:00:30 UTC
So, with the reorg itself well underway we need to think about redoing the webpage.

1. It needs to be moved to the proper location (as we are becoming a TLP) and expanded. I need to check if I have commit access to that area - I still should have one for translations, but the project pages are in a different block IIRC.

We had a conversation today on irc - me, metalgod and calchan and came up with an approximate subproject "hierarchy" that we could adopt. The main idea is not to limit ourselves to merely package maintenance but to emphasize some "more active" aspects/projects. The hope is that better visibility will help pursuing these (sub)projects. Even if something does not have developers behind it in the beginning, just the mere mention of the project may act as a catalyst (the state of the project can and should be reflected on its individual page of course).

So, here is the approximate layout we might adopt. Comments of the overall structure are wellcome. When we are satisfied with general hierarchy individual bugs can be opened for subprojects or their completion/status can be indicated here..

The idea is to have "grand-subprojects" that would contain sub-subprojects inside. Not every sub-sub may need a page. Principal grands may be:

1. Maintenance - categories, herds and other organizational stuff as needed..
Could contain pages of individual teams if they desire so, e.g.
1.1 Sci-physics
1.2 sci-mathematics
...

2. Extra infrastructure/semiofficial stuff?
Right now we have what would be
2.1 Scientific Overlay
  Also, metalgod suggested
2.2 Scientific LiveCD
2.3 anything else?

3. PR/ user interaction.
This could combine "active" projects if we can get people actually start doing promotional stuff :). For example
3.1 Repository of materials specific to Scientific Gentoo - howto's, extra docs, etc. Well, on a second thought this may fall under 2.x..
3.2 Presentational materials
3.3 Organization of events - talks at universities, during Linux events..
3.4 Some scientific initiatives? Right now Sci webpage lists HPC (high performance computing) initiative for example, although I doubt that is a nice one. First, it is probably better off belonging to cluster subproject, second, it did not see much activity since inception..

Last two (3.3 and 3.4) are the most tricky perhaps, as they require non-everyday-maintenance type of activity and people to actually start doing this whole promotion :). However, and this is the main reason I wrote that 2nd paragraph, we may start by simply listing the intentions, announcing them and trying to form a team. Hopefully something will start to crystallize out of it sooner or later..

We should get a CVS admin to do a repocopy (cp the ,v files, then cvs rm the old locations) so we retain history.

Check what could become the Electronics Suproject's webpage here:

Hi all,

How about a rewrite of our projects pages?
I started it in our science svn repo in
overlays.gentoo.org/svn/proj/science/docs/proj
Everyone welcome, my writing and guidexml skills are not quite ripe.
