I realize there's a bug filed for this same build for x86. There didn't appear to be an option to specify more than 1 platform at a time without selecting "all".

The following is where the process dies during emerge...

checking for makekdewidgets... /usr/kde/3.5/bin/makekdewidgets
checking for xmllint... /usr/bin/xmllint
checking whether to use kmdi lib from kdelibs... yes
checking whether to use the knewstuff lib from kdelibs... yes
checking if kalyptus should be compiled... yes

Please, do not open new reports for already reported bugs. The fact that the platform states x86, does not mean it is not reproducible under other architectures. Furthermore, if it is reproducible under your architecture, you can simply add "it fails for me as well" or something like that.

Obviously, if it fails for x86 and amd64, it *could* mean that it fails for all architectures.

Thanks for reporting.
