This problem was brought to my attention by Brian Harring when he notices fetch failures for app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-7.0-r1:

There was a bug in portage (now fixed) that caused of of the MD5 digests to be discarded in this commit:

Note to self: a portage upgrade will fix this issue.

We've got portage-2.1 on osprey now, so this is fixed.
