Description UncleOwen 2006-06-03 12:51:55 UTC
It would be nice if portage had some kind of support for when two packages are merged into one. This would hopefully remove the need for blockers whenever this happens.

Recent examples for why this is needed:
udev - coldplug
shadow - pam-login
utempter - libutempter

Maybe this could be implemented with a new kind of entry in ${PORTDIR}/profile/updates/

I remember quite a number of cases, when such a feature would have been useful in the past. Both for Gentoo internal package reorganisation and when upstream renames their product. In this case it would be also nice, if the merge could be done over a transitional period, by aliasing one package with/to (sp?) the other temporarily (Having two packages, but treating it as a single logical one).

I doubt that it's worth the effort to have a separate update command for this case.
