Any ideas? I'm still running vulnerable firefox in an attempt to preserve this until the cause is found.
maybe try running `emerge -udD world` (generates a lot of output) and see if firefox is mentioned in there. Also do you see this issue with any other packages?
It's only mentioned in Depstring lines (and then only version 1.0-r3), and one Candidates line (for freetype - again 1.0-r3). I honestly don't know if any other packages have this issue - how to find out? My world file is rather large: # wc -l /var/lib/portage/world 671 /var/lib/portage/world Is there a maximum portage can handle?

Please provide emerge --pretend --debug output for the command that behaves unexpectedly.
arghs... It is emerged, but not in the world file: drunken portage # pwd /var/lib/portage drunken portage # cat world |grep poppler drunken portage #
If there's still a problem here, please repolen with emerge --pretend --debug output for the command that behaves unexpectedly.
The problem is still happening with firefox (portage 2.1.1): # emerge -pv mozilla-firefox .. # emerge -pud world &>emerge_-pud_world.log is here: http://mal.sh/gentoo/emerge_-pud_world.log
Your debug log should contain something like this for each package in the world file: Parent: None Depstring: www-client/mozilla-firefox Candidates: ['www-client/mozilla-firefox'] But firefox is missing, as if it's not even in the world file. Please attach your world file.
Created attachment 97036 [details] world world file attached. www-client/mozilla-firefox is at line 285
I moved firefox to line 1 of the world file and did emerge -puv world, still no firefox.
I still have no clue what's causing this. Maybe if you create a python trace then I might get a clue: FEATURES=python-trace emerge -pud world > debug.log 2>&1 That will create an extremely large log. Please compress it with bzip2 and put it someplace for me to download.

Is 'www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r3' listed in /etc/portage/profile/package.provided? That's what this line seems to suggest: portage_dep.py line=288 name=match_from_list event=call locals={'candidate_list': ['www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r3'], 'mydep': 'www-client/mozilla-firefox'}
Yes it is, sorry for not noticing that sooner. I put it in there because I didn't need the fix it provided and didn't have the time to compile. It shouldn't cause what we're seeing though, right?
As a side note, package.provided also contained mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5-r2, and yet thunderbird has been updated fine since.
(In reply to comment #18) > It shouldn't cause what we're seeing though, right? Yes, it will. I'll at least add a warning message for this case so that it's more obvious. (In reply to comment #19) > As a side note, package.provided also contained > mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5-r2, and yet thunderbird has been updated > fine since. Anyway, package.provide can cause the problem that you've reported.

I'll at least add a warning message for this case so that it's > more obvious. It may well do, but my point was that it should not. If you are "providing" a specific version, newer versions should still be updated to, correct? That aside, emerge -pv <package> and emerge -puv world act differently - that's broken IMO. > Anyway, package.provide can cause the problem that you've reported. Indeed. Is the fix to not use package.provided at all?
package.provided means that the package is provided by the host system that Gentoo is running on top of. Originally implemented for OSX but also useful for anything that one wants to maintain outside of portage - such as kernels. The key there is that packages listed in package.provided are *maintained outside of portage*. Also from the man page: "Portage will not attempt to update a package that is listed here unless another package explicitly requires a version that is newer than what has been listed."
Thanks, that explains it all. I was under the impression that package.provided was a drop in replacement for --inject. I assume that I should package.mask specific package versions that I don't want updated to, instead?
