Description MAL 2006-05-17 04:08:07 UTC
# emerge -pv mozilla-firefox

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.3 [1.5.0.1-r2]

---

# emerge -pu world

[nothing]

---

# emerge -puD world

[7 packages, none of which are mozilla-firefox]

---

# grep firefox /var/cache/edb/world
www-client/mozilla-firefox

---

Any idea what's up? I'm left wondering what other packages aren't being updated!

---

Comment 3 MAL 2006-05-23 04:47:09 UTC
Any ideas?
I'm still running vulnerable firefox in an attempt to preserve this until the cause is found.
Comment 4 Marius Mauch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-23 05:06:19 UTC
maybe try running `emerge -udD world` (generates a lot of output) and see if firefox is mentioned in there.
Also do you see this issue with any other packages?
Comment 5 MAL 2006-05-23 05:24:02 UTC
It's only mentioned in Depstring lines (and then only version 1.0-r3), and one Candidates line (for freetype - again 1.0-r3).

I honestly don't know if any other packages have this issue - how to find out?

My world file is rather large:

# wc -l /var/lib/portage/world
671 /var/lib/portage/world

Is there a maximum portage can handle?
Comment 6 damage 2006-09-13 09:14:06 UTC
first tried:
--------------------------------------------------------
drunken ~ # emerge -vptuD world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating world dependencies... done!
[ebuild U ] dev-perl/DBD-mysql-3.0006 [3.0002] 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB
--------------------------------------------------------

wondering about this:
--------------------------------------------------------
drunken ~ # emerge -pv poppler

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U ] app-text/poppler-0.5.3 [0.5.0-r5] USE="jpeg (-cairo%)" 1,025 kB

Total size of downloads: 1,025 kB
--------------------------------------------------------

I think it is a problem with the update option, isn't it? If so, this one is critical!

arghs... It is emerged, but not in the world file:

Comment 9 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2006-09-14 00:23:29 UTC
If there's still a problem here, please repolen with emerge --pretend --debug output for the command that behaves unexpectedly.
Comment 10 MAL 2006-09-14 03:19:32 UTC
The problem is still happening with firefox (portage 2.1.1):

# emerge -pv mozilla-firefox
..

# emerge -puvD world | grep firefox
[nothing]

# grep firefox /var/lib/portage/world
www-client/mozilla-firefox

I will attach emerge --debug

# emerge -pud world &>emerge_-pud_world.log

is here:

http://mal.sh/gentoo/emerge_-pud_world.log
Comment 12 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2006-09-14 10:50:59 UTC
Your debug log should contain something like this for each package in the world file:

Parent: None
Depstring: www-client/mozilla-firefox
Candidates: ['www-client/mozilla-firefox']

But firefox is missing, as if it's not even in the world file. Please attach your world file.

world file attached. www-client/mozilla-firefox is at line 285
Comment 14 MAL 2006-09-15 02:27:45 UTC
I moved firefox to line 1 of the world file and did emerge -puv world, still no firefox.
Comment 15 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2006-09-15 02:54:40 UTC
I still have no clue what's causing this. Maybe if you create a python trace then I might get a clue:

FEATURES=python-trace emerge -pud world > debug.log 2>&1

That will create an extremely large log. Please compress it with bzip2 and put it someplace for me to download.
Comment 17 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2006-09-15 05:19:47 UTC
Is 'www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r3' listed in /etc/portage/profile/package.provided? That's what this line seems to suggest:

portage_dep.py line=288 name=match_from_list event=call locals={'candidate_list': ['www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r3'], 'mydep': 'www-client/mozilla-firefox'}
Comment 18 MAL 2006-09-15 06:04:46 UTC
Yes it is, sorry for not noticing that sooner.
I put it in there because I didn't need the fix it provided and didn't have the time to compile.

It shouldn't cause what we're seeing though, right?
Comment 19 MAL 2006-09-15 06:07:13 UTC
As a side note, package.provided also contained mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5-r2, and yet thunderbird has been updated fine since.

Yes, it will. I'll at least add a warning message for this case so that it's more obvious.

Anyway, package.provide can cause the problem that you've reported.

It may well do, but my point was that it should not.
If you are "providing" a specific version, newer versions should still be updated to, correct?

That aside, emerge -pv <package> and emerge -puv world act differently - that's broken IMO.

> Anyway, package.provide can cause the problem that you've reported.

Indeed. Is the fix to not use package.provided at all?
Comment 22 Jason Stubbs (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-15 08:59:55 UTC
package.provided means that the package is provided by the host system that Gentoo is running on top of. Originally implemented for OSX but also useful for anything that one wants to maintain outside of portage - such as kernels. The key there is that packages listed in package.provided are *maintained outside of portage*.

Also from the man page:
"Portage will not attempt to update a package that is listed here unless another package explicitly requires a version that is newer than what has been listed."
Comment 23 MAL 2006-09-15 09:44:01 UTC
Thanks, that explains it all. I was under the impression that package.provided was a drop in replacement for --inject.

I assume that I should package.mask specific package versions that I don't want updated to, instead?
