qmail was installed with emerge -v mail-mta/qmail

Hmm... it seems I should have used emerge --config =mail-mta/qmail-1.03-r16
but that's what the message was:

 * To setup qmail to run out-of-the-box on your system, run:
 * emerge --config =qmail-1.03-r16
