I wrote an ebuild for this very useful backup script that you probably already know, so that it can be integrated in portage. Here it is.

Perhaps if it can read settings from user's(especially root) home directory - there can be greater chances to get it in portage, i think.
app-backup/mkstage4 is in tree now, but it's a different bit of software (https://github.com/TheChymera/mkstage4).
