I have been running alsa as a modules's in my kernel since 2.6.15-r1. After upgrading to 2.6.16-r1 alsa has stopped working. I use the hda-intel module. There is a post on the gentoo-wiki (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix#Troubleshooting_Kernel_2.6.16) about it. gamma shifty # emerge --info Portage 2.1_pre7-r4 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-3.4.5, glibc-2.3.5-r3, 2.6.16-gentoo-r1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.16-gentoo-r1 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.50GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.6.14 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i386-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-Os -march=i686 -pipe" CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/eselect/compiler /etc/gconf /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-Os -march=i686 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks keepwork metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.swin.edu.au/gentoo http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Gentoo" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.au.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X a52 aac acpi alsa apache2 apm arts avahi avi berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 cairo cdr cli crypt ctype cups daap dba dbus divx4linux dri dv dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode esd expat fame fastbuild fbsplash firefox flac foomaticdb force-cgi-redirect fortran ftp gd gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gstreamer010 gtk gtk2 hal i8x0 imlib ipv6 irssi isdnlog java jpeg libg++ libwww mad memlimit mikmod motif mozcalendar mozilla mp3 mpeg mysql ncurses nfs nls nptl nsplugin ogg opengl oss pam pcre pdflib perl png posix pppd python quicktime readline real samba sdl session silc simplexml soap sockets spell spl ssl subtitles symlink synaptics tagwriting tcpd theora tokenizer truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev vorbis win32codecs xchat xml xml2 xmms xsl xv xvid zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse kernel_linux userland_GNU video_cards_i810" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, MAKEOPTS gamma shifty # and .... gamma shifty # cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xdfebc000 irq 16 gamma shifty # Hope this helps fix this issue, .Pat
Are you using alsa ebuilds, not the in-kernel alsa? If so, you need >=1.0.11_rc3, 1.0.10 won't work w/ 2.6.16 kernels. That's not a bug. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 127567 ***
