Looks like gedit doesn't like LDFLAGS="-Wl,--as-needed". Patch to follow shortly.

I have no problem here with -Wl,--as-needed, gedit-2.14.2 and binutils-2.16.92. Is this bug still valid for you?

This is also working for me in 2.14.2.
