If /mnt/cdrom is mounted the emerge fails with: 
 
!!! Cannot write to '/mnt/cdrom'. 
!!! Please check permissions and directories for broken symlinks. 
!!! You may start the merge process again by using ebuild: 
!!! ebuild /usr/portage/sys-apps/baselayout/baselayout-1.8.5.5.ebuild merge 
!!! And finish by running this: env-update
