you need hal 0.5.7 AND gnome-mount 0.4 installed in order for this to work

The problem is its kind of broke atm. If you are on a new install, you won't already be in the plugdev group from last release, and won't have permission to automount. Cardoe should have a new hal in the tree sometime soon that address the issue and will work out of the box :)
The new hal does not solve this for me.
Kill gnome-volume-manager, and then run: # gnome-volume-manager -n Then plug in a USB flash device and watch the output.
I have the same issue. All that gives me is "gnome-mount 0.4".
Please elaborate. You mean all you get is: # killall gnome-volume-manager # gnome-volume-manager -n gnome-mount 0.4 ?
When I plug in my USB disk I used to get the following pop up. Can not mount volume You are not privledged to mount the volume 'USB MEMORY'. And the following output from g-v-m... cardoe@dlaptop ~ $ killall gnome-volume-manager cardoe@dlaptop ~ $ gnome-volume-manager -n gnome-mount 0.4 However it turned out I had a stale entry in /etc/fstab from fstab-sync (I had to compile hal-0.4.x for testing). Soon as I got rid of the entry everything worked fine. Just an idea of something to check.
Same here ("gnome-volume-manager -n" prints only "gnome-mount 0.4" upon attaching my USB device. I have no stale fstab entry, though.
(In reply to comment #9) > Please elaborate. You mean all you get is: > > # killall gnome-volume-manager > # gnome-volume-manager -n > gnome-mount 0.4 > > ? > Exactly.

using portage's hal-0.5.7 ebuild and switching to gentoo-sources-2.6.16 solved my problems with gnome-mount-2.14.0 and disk mount applet.
I had no /media directory (it somehow got deleted in the upgrade to 2.14..). Creating it solved my problem.
I was missing the /media directory, too. Works fine now, closing.
