UPDATE BY REPORTER: Gave install another try the following night (tonight). This time, emerge system was killed after installing Portage (the package directly before binutils). The message said Portage successful, but would have to restart merge manually because of changes in handling db cache (or something like that ... sorry, the actual message is long gone). This did not occur during last night's attempt. So I re-ran emerge system, which picked up with binutils and happily went through it just fine. emerge system is still humming away on gcc now; the part pertaining to this bug report is done. I notice the changelogs for Portage show a "fixed ebuild" between last night's try and tonight's ..... I don't know if it is my place to mark this "resolved", but there you go :-)
Ok, great to here!
