Description Attila Stehr 2006-01-22 14:36:40 UTC
When I start xmms as normal user and right klick there are only shortcuts but no text (like 'play' or 'options' shown. Have a look at the screenshots please.
This seems to be an access problem since xmms started by root is fine.

Comment 4 Attila Stehr 2006-01-23 08:32:09 UTC
correction:
The problem exists when using root too. When I made the tests yesterday I guess there was some stuff in the systems (?) cache or whatever. Now xmms looks the same as in the screenshots for root and a common user.
Comment 5 Attila Stehr 2006-02-06 13:12:57 UTC
Looks like mplayer package dos not install UTF-8 fonts.

magic media # ls /usr/share/mplayer/font
.  ..  font.desc  iso-8859-1-a.raw  iso-8859-1-b.raw  osd-mplayer-a.raw  osd-mplayer-b.raw

magic media # emerge --info
[...]
LANG="de_DE.utf8"
LC_ALL="de_DE@euro.utf8"
[...]

I'm not sure if xine has the same problem:
magic media # ls /usr/share/xine/libxine1/fonts/
.                  cc-64.xinefont.gz   cetus-16.xinefont.gz  mono-20.xinefont.gz  sans-24.xinefont.gz   serif-32.xinefont.gz

Changing priority to P1 since (g)mplayer and xine(-ui) are not usable (settings et cetera)...
Comment 6 Attila Stehr 2006-02-06 13:19:46 UTC
This site http://ru.gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ru_RU.utf8_Gentoo_way suggests
'USE="unicode" emerge mplayer'
but unicode use flag doesn't existt...
Comment 7 Attila Stehr 2006-02-06 13:34:38 UTC
Altering component to "applications" maybe this speedups somebody taking a look at this...
Comment 8 Attila Stehr 2006-02-06 13:57:41 UTC
Maybe bug reports #77175 and #92017 which refer to _messages_ are connected with the problem although I (mainly) _refer_ to the _context_menu_ _buttons_ and other gui related ... erm ... 'letter stuff'. :)

Maybe a duplicate from #123213 ?
Comment 12 Attila Stehr 2006-03-05 11:55:41 UTC
Maybe it's related to it but my context menu contains no descriptions at all.

Admittedly something changed since by now I have the problem described in bug #123213. Nonetheless, it's not the same problem. :->

I use patch from bug #123213. It's working.
Comment 15 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-21 07:16:50 UTC
that would be something for xine-ui to deal with then.
Comment 16 Attila Stehr 2006-03-24 14:38:44 UTC
Alright,
will the mplayer patch be included in the mplayer ebuild soon?
Comment 17 PL Hayes 2006-07-05 20:10:18 UTC
Same problem with dillo. Works okay with LANG=C or LANG=en_GB.utf8 but not LANG=en_GB. Looks like a gtk+-1 related problem to me.
Comment 18 PL Hayes 2006-07-05 20:18:37 UTC
BTW, The summary says xine-ui but the pictures are of mplayer and xmms gtk menus and xine-ui isn't gtk+ based anyway. Is that a typo - was it supposed to be xmms?
Comment 19 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-06 01:03:13 UTC
Hmm, I can reproduce with latest xine-ui here. Sounds like related to Xorg as xine-ui uses the old *-*-*-*-*-*-* specification.

Well, yes that was a typo ... but due to comment #19 xine-ui seems to be affected too.

Yes - I've now discovered the same or very similar problems with xdvi, snd and xeukleides (not in portage).
Comment 22 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-25 19:25:34 UTC
I can't reproduce any of these problems on X 7.1.

Nor can I now that I've rebuilt my locales with locale-gen

Attila, give that a try.
Comment 25 Attila Stehr 2006-07-29 16:19:13 UTC
Well, to be honest xine and mplayer are okay now. I think it was some settings in ... well, I'm not sure but it might have been setting LC_ALL="de_DE.utf8" (was de_DE@euro.utf8 before).

I'm getting this error message now (I have to klick OK after the gdm-login to make metacity load):
---------
everything/current:Jul 29 22:26:00 [rc-scripts] Bad entry in locale.gen: 'de_DE.UTF-8 '; skipping
---------
Why is locale-gen satisfied then?! (see below)

Nontheless XMMS shows some wrong chars instead of umlauts but in general the letters are there. Buut AFAIK that's because XMMS doesn't support UTF-8 right?

so this did not help:

magic atti # cat /etc/locale.gen | grep DE
#de_DE ISO-8859-1
#de_DE@euro ISO-8859-15
de_DE.UTF-8 UTF-8
magic atti # locale-gen
 * Generating 1 locales (this might take a while)
 *  (1/1) Generating de_DE.UTF-8 ...                                                                                                        [ ok ] * Generation complete
magic atti #

And ... I won't upgrade to modular X until I was able to make images of my 'linux harddisks'.
Comment 26 Attila Stehr 2006-09-14 14:08:39 UTC
I am using modular Xorg (7.0) now and have the same (minor) problems (see comment #25).
Comment 27 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-29 04:06:49 UTC
Cannot reproduce w/ xorg-7.1 either (and wrt comment #25 - xmms has been removed from portage).

Closing this one.
