Don't remember doing anything but emerge -u world. Has been about a week since I rebooted the computer so hard to tell, but didn't recompile the kernel or do anything in /lib/modules/* Rebooted the system and Usb Mouse, which worked fine, didn't work any more. Located problem with missing hid.o module. Modprobe fails with: Modprobe: Can't locate module keybdev which is needed for hid. Note: Don't have a usbmouse. Can though 'insmod hid' and mouse will start working right away!! Noticed nothing unusual in /etc/modules.autoload,... Did notice that modules.dep did not include input.o module after hid.o module as a dep. Did a depmod -ae after insmod and it put it there then. Still reboot fails on hid loading. Work around was to put 'insmod hid' in /etc/conf.d/local.start
****** Replace that --> Note: Don't have a usbmouse. With ---> Note: Don't have a usb keyboard. ****** Sorry.
Found the problem. The problem is modutils-2.4.22 Unmerged and put 2.4.19 back and removed the insmod hid line in local.start. Rebooted and worked. Then put 2.4.20 in and it works also. So the problem appears to be in modutils-2.4.22
Had a thread going in the gentoo forum if want to look for more details. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=147263#147263
