I updated all Docbook-related packages I could find, but the problem persisted. I also used Vim to look inside the file /usr/kde/3.5/bin/meinproc (a binary), which seems to be the trigger for the problem in the listing above, & noticed the following in lines 46-48 (I've collapsed multiple instances of ^@)): Output whole document to file^@htdig^@check^@cache ... unable to parse %s ... Cache^@<FILENAME ^@index.html^@"^@customization/htdig_index.xsl^@customization/kde-chunk.xsl^@' lacks a '='!^@Key-Value tuple '^@outputFile^@customization/catalog^@SGML_CATALOG_FILES^@/usr/bin/xmllint^@ --catalogs --valid --noout ^@ 2>&1^@couldn't find xmllint^@exe^@' is not readable.^@File '^@' is not a file.^@' does not exist. ... document of the wrong type, root node != entry^@Could not write to cache file %1 [end of extract from Meinproc] The error message from the Kicker ebuild refers to 'meinproc' & a failure to find an index file, which the above says it can't create. There is an open bug report 96890 reporting a similar problem in KDE 3.4.1 , but I have submitted this as a new bug as it concerns a slotted version 3.5 still under test & I believe it deserves a fresh look (I have KDE 3.4.1 installed & had no problem with it).
