i dont really see the point ... they're kind of helpful in that they indicate when the manpage was last updated

I have no problem with this scheme as long as you remember to update the versions when changing the manual pages. A cvs header tag would any way be more appropriate for checking when the page was last updated.
have that diff is garbage because it's diffing two diff man trees synced trunk and savior in portage
