Firefox 1.5 (but not firefox-bin) often renders fonts as unreadable garbage. This problem also shows itself in programs like yelp that use the firefox rendering engine. Versions prior to 1.5 of mozilla-firefox and all versions of mozilla-firefox-bin do not exhibit the bug. A screenshot of the bug is attached. This really isn't a Mozilla bug. It actually seems to be related to anything using GTK+-2 (I have no such problems with QT applications). I can reproduce this with gkrellm2, beep-media-player, firefox-1.5 (the non-bin version), gimp, and aumix. However, I am not able to reproduce this with all apps. For example, the new nmap frontend, gftp, and mozilla-firefox-1.5-bin work fine. Furthermore, the font breakage is far from consistent. Something that looks all screwed up might fix itself if you move the window around, move a window in front of it, close a menu and then re-open it, only to jump to a different menu or part of the applications. This problem is severe enough that the affected applications are totally unusable.
