Can you paste the error after setting LC_ALL=C to have English error messages?

It looks like you tried to compile it in the KDE itself.

First of all you must to exit KDE, close/kill all KDE processes (the simplest way to do it - "init 1") and then compile kde* (e.g. "emerge -uDN world").

Please be sure that you have all files needed for compilation if you'll use "init 1". The best way to do it - "emerge -uDNf world" before the "init 1".

I tried everything - with and without X. And I updated KDE cleanly on my home machine without errors.

Actually after some time error disappeared and I was able to update KDE on work machine too. I have no idea what was the reason for this.

I think the same in src_install

cp -f /dev/null .../image/.../katekttsd/ui.rc
fails in 'setting attributes' as operation not supported

what is the problem?

try to reemerge acl, attr if installed and coreutils.
On my system the problem is located on the cp -f /dev/null .../kate/.../ui.rc istruction in make. Verify what results from the command cp /dev/null file please.

Assuming this is not a problem with KDE 3.5. If this is still an issue, reopen please.
