Clicking the preview button in ksplash-ml doesn't work. Upon investigating I discovered that this is a 
result of the kde-env system. The ksplash-ml executable is in /usr/bin (as reported by whereis ksplash) 
however the ksplash executable in /usr/kde/version/bin. 
 
The versions of the splash screen are as follows: 
 
david@ursamajor david $ /usr/kde/3.1/bin/ksplash --version 
Qt: 3.1.0 
KDE: 3.0.99 (KDE 3.1 RC3) 
The KDE Splash Screen: 0.3 
 
david@ursamajor david $ /usr/bin/ksplash --version 
Qt: 3.1.0 
KDE: 3.0.99 (KDE 3.1 RC3) 
ksplash: 0.95.3 
 
Now because of the way the path in kde-env is setup, executables in /usr/kde/version/bin are executed 
instead of /usr/bin. My temporary solution was to move the executable shipped with kde to a backup 
copy (ksplash.old) and symlink ksplash in that directory to the executable in /usr/bin.
