I am following the handbook for a gentoo installation using the Universal Installation CD. Step 5a gives us the choice between downloading a Stage tarball, or using the one already contained on the installation CD. This is good, as there is already a Stage tarball on my CD, so I used it. However, further down in this page, it states that I *must* install a Portage snapshot which is downloaded from the internet. No alternate option is mentioned. The handbook should mention that there is a Portage snapshot already contained within the Universal Installation CD at /mnt/cdrom/snapshot/portage-200.1.tar.bz2 which can be used instead of a downloaded version. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Read the handbook =)
That was done on purpose. The networkless handbook uses the snapshot on the CD because there's no other choice. The handbook that requires an Internet connection asks to download a snapshot because it's faster than to use the snapshot and then run `emerge --sync`. FYI, the snapshot on the CD is 5 months old.
