Description Paul Taylor 2005-11-25 03:08:47 UTC
After updating my Gentoo boxes this week, I no longer have sound after
rebooting. I haven't managed to identify which update caused this, so apologies
it this report is a bit vague.

The boxes are an AMD64 + emu10k1, Athlon XP + via82xx and Pentium 4 + intel_8x0;
all are using their respective unstable portage tree, and all have the same problem.

The sound modules are loaded correctly, but the /dev/sound and /dev/snd entries
are missing. This can be corrected by running "udevstart", followed by "alsactl
restore -f /etc/asound.state" to restore the mixer levels. This suggests the
problem is with the start up sequence - baselayout problem?

I currently have the following runlevel settings for relevant services:

alsasound:  default
coldplug: boot (was default, but apparently this isn't recommended now)
hotplug:    default
hald:       default

Any ideas?

Output from "emerge info" (for the amd64 box):
