USE="php" emerge lighttpd will install (among other things) php-cgi and use this to handle php pages. However, its configuration out of the box, php-cgi is built without USE="fastcgi". fastcgi is necessary for lighttpd to use its php support without extensive config file changes. Indeed, the default /etc/lighttpd.conf assumes that php is built with fastcgi. This is with php-cgi-4.4.0-r5 and lighttpd-1.3.16. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. On a fresh system, with 'php' in its useflags, emerge lighttpd. 2. After making sure that the fastcgi part is uncommented in /etc/lighttpd.conf and handling php files, /etc/init.d/lighttpd start. 3. So put fastcgi into your use flags... Portage won't handle such things for you.
