Description Chris White (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-14 22:32:22 UTC
I had some suggestions for making it easier for users to navigate the
leftmost menu on the front page. Currently, the layout is as displayed here:

  Installation Docs

Old news....

Attached I have a new structure posted. Some of the main points are:

1) Created a Support main menu level for addressing where our main support
resources are. This helps users who need help, and would otherwise have to
navigate through various resources that do not quite offer them.

2) Moved a lot of information that states what Gentoo is about to an
"Introduction" top level menu. This is more in depth about who were are,
including what we do, how we do it, why we do it, and who supports us.

3) Moved "Mirrors" to "Download Mirrors" to be more descriptive in the
intention. Also moved it to "Installation" as users may need it during
installation for stages and livecd's.

4) Moved "Gentoo BitTorrents" to Installation, as it offers an alternative way
of grabbing install cd's.

5) Split Non-support Resources into User and Developer resouces. User
resources are things that both users and developers would benifit from.
Developer resources are considered things that developers would use (Our list
of devs, our cvs for developing users who may need to check something, most
users won't touch viewcvs), staffing needs to hire future developers, and a
suggestions to a link to the Developer Handbook for future developers to
reference to.

That's it. Please feel free to comment on anything, or otherwise tear it into
tiny shreads. If this requires any sort of changes, let me know and I'll
provide patches to the relevant documentation.

The proposed new menu structure.

Take a look at http://wwwredesign.gentoo.org and see what you think about that
menu. A lot of what you proposed is already done there but it could still use
some polish. The menus at the bottom are replacing the left column. The topmost
menu is toplevel domains, the next menu down is for site level categories and
important stuff like the handbook and the rest is all contained in the menus at
the bottom.

The redesign is just days away from going to the final approval phase (I'm doing
the last bit of code cleanup now) so it should go live soonish.

The redesign failed. I'm closing this as an ancient bug.
