i'm fixed but have seen this all day and i cant remember which is at foult but
nvidia-glx   & nvidia-kernel  are emerging two diffrent versions on ~amd64 one
is 1.0.7676-r1 and the other is 1.0.7667 and that dont work!!!!! the newer
offending pkg needs to be masked to make X work....

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge world or -uD world oct...
2, xinit ...it fails with glx and kernel are two diffren versiens
3.

Please give the exact error as I can't see any problem from your description. 
It might be the case that your nvidia-kernel package is installed for a
different kernel version than you are currently running.  Make sure that the
running kernel has the same driver version (ignoring -rX) as your nvidia-glx
package.
