I decided that I wanted to try Gnome 2.1.12 (I haven't had Gnome installed before on this machine). After installing gnome-light and some programs that I think I would like, I have missing icons. Like the show desktop putton on the bottom left corner. I went the Theme Preferences and to Theme Details of the Clearlooks theme I seem to have on. In there I had icons named Gnome as the first option but after I switched to other icon themes the Gnome entry disappeared. I have tried to search if I would need to install something to get the icons working but I haven't found anything. I have gnome-themes and gnome-icon-theme and gnome-themes installed. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: pena portage # emerge info !!! Relying on the shell to locate gcc, this may break !!! DISTCC, installing gcc-config and setting your current gcc !!! profile will fix this Portage 2.0.53_rc6 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.13-gentoo-r4 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.13-gentoo-r4 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre9 ccache version 2.4 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.13 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.20 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe -mfpmath=sse -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/init.d /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe -mfpmath=sse -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/src/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache collision-protect cvs distlocks fixpackages sandbox sfperms sign strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS=" http://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo http://lame.lut.fi/linux/gentoo " LANG="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL="en_US.utf8" LINGUAS="fi" MAKEOPTS="-j2 -s" PKGDIR="/home/pkg/" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/mnt/checkouts/overlays/betelgeuse /mnt/checkouts/overlays/java" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X aac acl acpi alsa apm arts audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bluetooth browserplugin bzip2 bzlib cdb cddb cdparanoia cdr crypt cups dbus dts dvd dvdr dvdread emboss esd firefox foomaticdb freetype gif gstreamer gtk2 hal java jpeg kde kdeenablefinal libg++ libwww logitech-mouse lzo mad makecheck mikmod mjpeg mmx mmx2 mp3 mpeg ncurses network nptl nptlonly nsplugin nvidia offensive ogg oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib png qt quicktime readline real rtc ruby samba spell sse sse2 ssl subversion svg symlink tcpd theora tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb userlocales vorbis win32codecs xine xml xml2 xv xvid zlib video_cards_nvidia linguas_fi userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LDFLAGS

Ya, this is VERY recent as far as I can tell. At most 1-2 day old bug. A quick glace at my emerge log would libsvg as the only candidate for breaking. Some other examples are the "Places" and "Desktop" icons in the gnome menu. All the rest of my icons in the menus appear intact. Most wigdet/toolbar icons appear to be broken (New, Open, Save, Print, Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Find, Replace, Add, Cancel, Close, Print Preview).

On second thought, for some reason, my issues fixed itself after a reboot. Anyways, another sympton I noticed was that the save dialogs which should have had a place to type the file name didn't have it. Plus, if the current folder was the desktop, the save menu at the top would say unknown.

Marking closed as pointed out by comment #6.
This was caused by 14:10 <@Betelgeuse> leio_: /usr/share/icons/gnome is drwxr--r-- 9 root root 280 2007-11-13 02:32 . here I think it should be 755 and that's why all the gnome stuff has borked icons for me It seems this bug got mistakenly marked as fixed ages ago so there is probably not much to do ebuild side nowadays but adding this info here for reference.
