I'm also experiencing this. I looked at Alan's config log and noticed the
following line:
configure:3345: error: the --with-apr-util parameter is incorrect. It must
specify an install prefix, a build directory, or an apu-config file.

You were only the second to find the problem. It's caused by swig. The ebuilds
in the tree should have fixed dependencies.
