Xastir 1.7.0 (xastir-stable) has been released.
This release also includes bugfixes since 1.6.0 version as it is said here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=364132
Changing version of the current 1.6.0 ebuild to 1.7.0 ebuild works for me.

1.6.0 is merged.

Merge 1.7.0 ;)

If possible, also with this version bump change the description to:  X Amateur Station Tracking and Information Reporting.

It seems that in the ebuild provided in this bug the description has been improved.

Upstream is @ 1.8.2 now, anyway - no maintainer, depends on p.masked ax25 stuff, plus it has hardcoded /usr/local all over the places, which is plain wrong.

I just have to say that for a package that did work as it was, this really sucks.  Gentoo was the distro with the best support for xastir regardless of any version bumps..

People are complaining about this being missing, the attached ebuild is perfectly legit. I'm not gonna maintain it, but it's available from my overlay (emerge layman; layman -a masterdriverz; emerge xastir) for the moment.
