Description Matteo Spreafico 2005-10-09 14:13:54 UTC
Our Bitcollider is a small program you can run on your own computer to reliably
identify and describe files on your machine. When run with a specific file as
input, this program does two major things:

    * It examines the file, calculating a distinctive digital fingerprint, or
bitprint, and taking note of some other identifying information that can be
extracted from the file, like file length and the local filename.
    * It launches your web browser to do a lookup at our website, submitting
this identifying information as the search terms.

At our website, you'll see what - if anything - others have said about your
file: what it really is, where it came from, and what people think of it. You'll
also have a chance to contribute descriptions or comments yourself. If your
automatic submission included information useful to our database, that new
information will be contributed to the database. You may choose whether this
contribution occurs under your Bitzi screen name, or anonymously.

The Bitcollider includes no adware or other bundled third-party software.

The Bitcollider only initiates connection to our webserver when you activate it
on a specific file. All of its communication occurs through your default web
browser, where you can see all the data it submits.

bitcollider-0.4.0-sandbox.patch

fixes the sandbox issue, I've reported this patch upstream
Comment 3 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-02 12:16:04 UTC
Uhm, http://bitzi.com is dead, the last release is 2+ years old, and an ebuild with a sole purpose to produce metadata for a project that went MIA is pretty pointless.

WONTFIX, sorry.
Comment 4 Rafal Rzepecki 2008-04-07 05:36:54 UTC
bitzi.com is up again.

The ebuild (with the patch) works for bitcollider-0.6.0. Only trivial modifications are needed (will attach shortly).
