Description Sridhar Dhanapalan 2005-10-02 21:37:12 UTC
Some Web pages that contain Flash make Mozilla 1.7.11, Firefox 1.0 - 1.0.7,
Galeon 1.3.x (built with Firefox) and Konqueror (KDE 3.4.2) freeze.

Three examples are:
(1) http://www.theinquirer.net
(2)
http://beta.news.com.com/Ubuntu+carves+niche+in+Linux+landscape/2100-7344_3-5886194.html
(3) http://www.stickdeath.com

I think this problem has existed for at least six months.

Disabling the Flash plug-in (net-www/netscape-flash-7.0.25) eliminates the
problem. I have also tried using the Flashblock extension for Firefox. The
extension replaces the Flash animation with an overlay image, thereby preventing
the animation from loading. When the overlay image is clicked, the animation is
supposed to load. In my case, this freezes the browser.

Downgrading to netscape-flash-6.0.81 does not help.

This is not the same as Bug #63918. Exporting XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 does
nothing. I have a 16 (not 24/32) bit display.

Browsers which are not affected at all include Elinks, Links, Dillo, Netscape
4.8 and Opera 8.5.

I originally posted this as Bug #107844, but as instructed I'm posting it again
since it appears to be an issue with Flash and not the browsers.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

Other programmes I had running: KDE, Konqueror, Konsole, Kate, Kontact, D4x,
XMMS, Galeon.

stack trace for Firefox

Stack trace (strace) for Firefox. Steps taken:

1. load 'strace firefox' from a terminal
2. firefox loads to my home page (which doesn't have any Flash)
3. I type http://www.theinquirer.net/ into the URL bar
4. the site partially loads, then Firefox freezes.
Comment 2 Jory A. Pratt 2005-12-11 15:47:27 UTC
I can not do anything about flash problems when using a bianary package.
