I discovered several problems with tomcat. The biggest problem is, starting tomcat with init-scripts hangs ( i don't know why) executing the start-stop-daemon on console doesn't hang. What i discovered is from catalina.log it gets started and immediately stopped (no deploying happened). From commandline it starts complete also deploying and doesn't stop. So it shouldn't be a configuration problem. This could also be a result of the current baselayout (sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.0_pre8-r2). I'm using sun-jdk-1.4.2-09 also tried if with blackdown. Other things I've discovered. the /var/lib/tomcat-5/default/work-directory and some sub-directories are still root:root owned. The next thing I don't know if it is a bug. When not using the examples useflag the /ROOT doesn't get installed and as result the hint for testing tomcat http://127.0.0.1:8080 doesn't work. An other question, when installing first tomcat complains about the missing log4j-configuration, wouldn't it be better to enable it per default.
