According to bug 231831 comment 3, some applications still needed to be migrated to swscaler and/or stabilized. Not sure if that is still the case. Yes this still breaks a couple of apps due to the removal of the old_scaler. I'm against stabilising anything before 0.4.9_p20081014 since it breaks the abi without changing soname. 0.4.9_p20081014 is much cleaner and doesn't advertise anything about the old scaler anymore. One could check if it works with non swscaler enabled ffmpegs as libavcodec *should* provide the swscaler api too if libswscale is not built.
